Advice needed please

Advice needed  please

Another week, another UFO, I finished the top of my new Christmas laptop last summer but alas, it sat there, unquilted and unused and Christmas passed with no Christmas quilt in evidence.

As you can see it’s a log cabin with pieced centres which is kind of limiting.  I fell in love with the quilt as soon as I saw the pattern and I love how it has turned out.  The centres were awkward as the pieces are quite small, if I make it again I will draw it out and paper piece it rather than using the templates.  Some of my points are not as good as I’d prefer so the ‘blind man and galloping horse’ rule comes into play.   Yes, I am early for this Christmas but I would like to get a jump this year so the question is, how do I quilt it?

The houses are so cute.

The tree points were tricky.

Friendship stars in the corners.

So, how would you quilt it?

Moving on, I sort of called in to the local quilt shop this week, for a look, just passing the time, as you do and not intending to BUY anything but as I plan on making the Ugly Sweaters quilt and as the Christmas fabrics were on 25% off it seemed silly not to ‘invest’ in some fabrics now, as a starting point.  So, what do you think?

My plan is to make some plain sweaters in Christmas fabrics and some in solids with Christmas  blocks, pieced and appliquĂ©.  Any thoughts?

Lots to fussy cut here.

I thought about fussy cutting the reindeer facing the tree but now I'm not so sure, what do you think?

I love hearing other peoples views, and it often saves me from making stupid mistakes, I would so love your input.

I did happen to notice some lovely solids too and I really don’t have many, in fact it’s what I really lack, so, I invested in a few, ready for the quilt which is as yet a very vague idea in my head, just in case they don’t have the right colours when I need them.

Don’t you just love looking at them and when you touch them…………well, they don’t disappoint.

Until next time

  1. Let's see. I'd SID around the block centers, then do feathers diagonally through the brown and white areas. As for the ugly sweaters quilt, I think you've got yourself some wonderful choices! Can't wait to see some of the resulting blocks.

  2. Hi Kate. I would SID the cabins and the trees (and their details) - and also the brown parts of the log cabin blocks - then treat the white areas as negative space with an all-over filler design - which would make all those dark areas and the featured cabins and trees really pop! (Just my thoughts - can't wait to see what you do!). I know it will be gorgeous...whatever you do.

  4. What a lovely quilt! I loved the paper pieced centers. I would do something "curvy" to contrast with all the straight lines.

  5. I agree with Andrea and Heidi! I would SID everything, and then do feathers in the white space.

  6. Those little trees and houses are adorable!! I always have a hard time knowing how to quilt anything...but the advice given sounds like a great idea. Those solids are beautiful! Are they shot cottons?

  7. Very cute quilt. All those little pieces in the centers really make this a "Christmas" quilt. All of the suggestions give so far are great. My only addition is make sure the amount of stitching is fairly even. Don't quilt like crazy in the white/light area and just a little bit in the darks. It will look wonderful even if you decide to do an all over meander. Good luck.

  8. Seriously cute quilt. Quilting feathers would be lovely, or swirls - something to make you think of snowflakes.

  9. I love the houses and trees at the center of the log-cabin blocks. As to quilting, feathers seem a bit formal for the feel of the quilt. I wonder about various fills in alternating "logs': something like ribbon candy in one, wishbone in another, and one I don't have a name for, but three lines horizonally followed by three vertically and others. claire aka knitnkwilt

  10. I would SID the houses and then quilt the rest with big swirls to look like the wind and snow - a bit like the wind icon on the weather app on an iphone if that makes sense?!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave a comment, it helps me grow as a quilter and as a blogger. It also makes me very happy :)
I try to respond to all comments by email, but if I don't reply within a few days it may be because you are a no reply blogger
