I love the colours and the fabrics. In case this is your first visit the fabric used is Oakshott Lipari with Oakshott Colourshot charm centres in the 6 inch blocks.
I quilted it with stitch number 4 on my Bernina, stitch length 2, width 2.5. I used Aurifil 50/2 grey thread no 2605. It shows up slightly lighter than I expected but it was the darkest grey my local quilt shop had.
This is the first time I have made a pieced back. It's not quite as bright in reality and the colour shades are a little off. I used Warm and Natural wadding. What do you think of the quilting? I love the texture it gives, and not a pucker in sight. To be perfectly honest, it isn't as evenly spaced as you might think on the pics, but I don't care, I am so happy with the overall effect.
It is a quilting stitch I had never used before, but will be trying again. I was surprised at how long it took, I was thinking straight lines, but wavy takes a lot longer and a lot more thread. Quite nerve wracking on a special gift.
I did a proper posh staged one too hehe, can you tell I'm happy!
If you are interested there is a Lipari blog hop on right now. This is the first post on May 5th. My favourite so far is Crepuscular, you will love this one. I can hardly wait to see the rest of the quilts.
Would I use Oakshott Lipari again? In a heartbeat, but it is so expensive it would have to be on sale or for something special.

Kate, this is so gorgeous. The colors glow and shimmer. I have not done this sort of wavy line quilting because I haven't found a way to get the settings correct on my Janome. I don't think it is possible but maybe someone out there knows? If I quilt wavy, I just do an organic wave using the walking foot and my hands. This quilting is perfect for a guy's quilt to. I like the bit of angular movement it gives, very nice.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a stitch designed for making bra’s Bernie, it’s not in the regular quilting stitch section. According to the lovely Jacquie Gering, who I greatly admire, you can use many of your machine’s built in stitches for quilting. She suggests you make a quilt sandwich and experiment.
DeleteYahoo!! You have got to be proud of this one, Kate! Wonderful fabric, great piecing, great quilting, binding and backing. All around wonderful work! Your hubby will LOVE it!

ReplyDeleteKate, City Lights is a a perfect name, it just shimmers! Your husband must be thrilled, what a birthday present. The quilting is beautiful! I haven't used stitch #4 in a while, need to remember that. The scrappy binding is the perfect finish! Well done!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful finish Kate and I love the quilting you did! I've done something like that on small pieces and it does seems to take some time to do it but......worth it!
ReplyDeleteIt turned out just drop dead gorgeous! Love the binding-just perfect for this quilt. Congrats on your finish.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLucky husband! This is just the most goregous combination of colors!! I love shot cottons but have never used Oakshott before. Maybe one day! The quilting is wonderful too! It looks like silk in a couple of your pictures...the sheen! Well done Kate, its gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteOMG, the quilt is amazing. I love, love, love all the beautiful colors.
ReplyDeleteLove the posh picture, lol! I've never used shot cottons but I can only imagine how beautiful that fabrics are. The serpentine line quilting gives some great texture but it does take longer to quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt Kate ! And the binding is perfect too. I don't know if this kind of quilting is doable with my sewing machine. I will make a try.
ReplyDeleteI think those wavy lines work perfectly with the squares. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWow, Kate, this is amazing! I love the final project - you took great pics! (those Liparis are beautiful but hard to photograph sometimes!).

ReplyDeleteA stunning quilt, Kate. Your husband is very lucky. I love your wavy quilting and just checked stitch #4 on my Bernina. Found you via 'Sew Fresh Quilts'.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and your photographs show how the fabrics really have a lovely sheen and shimmer. I hope your husband is thrilled with his quilt. :)
ReplyDeleteMasculine quilts are so hard. I love how this came out.
ReplyDeleteThis is just gorgeous Kate - you are going to have one very happy husband! I have never tried wavy line quilting so it was interesting to hear it took longer than you anticipated. Well done on this great finish!
ReplyDeleteVery nice looking quilt. I am pleased to read how you stitched the quilting. My mom has a Bernina and I've used that stitch before to sew down a wide binding with minky. I have another finished quilt top needing quilting but am procrastinating big time. I just don't know what to do. Do you ever procrastinate?
ReplyDeleteKate, this is a fantastic quilt! and I love the quilting that you did on it...wonderful photography too! Please let me know if this tells you I am a no-reply
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous and name is perfect! What a wonderful gift for your husband. He is going to be thrilled!

Beautiful! and I love the last 'posh' pic too! I've tried that wiggly quilting stitch too, but only on baby quilts so far.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done! I hope Your Guy was suitably impressed with his gift.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous finish Kate! Love how you have paired the colorways, & that binding is perfection. Someday I must make a 'shotts' quilt, I love the drape!
ReplyDeleteThe Oakshott fabrics give your quilt a special sparkle. The pieced binding looks terrific, as well. I bet your husband was thrilled with it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt Kate. I love it. The wavy quilting sets it off so beautifully. Your husband must be very happy.

ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how lovely this is in person with those stunning Oakshotts! Beautifully done!
ReplyDeleteI love how the centers play with their "frames" - it's something I enjoy in a quilt: being able to look at it for ages and never being bored )) And the texture is amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lena. I never get sick of looking at this quilt, in fact I have it as my desktop pic and I've just added it as my header.
DeleteThank you so much for commenting you came up as a no reply blogger.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! Love the quilting design.
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely gift!
ReplyDeleteStunning.
ReplyDeleteOMG I love it and I hope your husband does as well. Your choice of quilting design is just so perfect for this quilt.
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt Kate! Great job on the quilting. I love how you couldn't resist telling us that the lines aren't evenly spaced. As if anyone would have noticed! I'm totally writing down your quilt settings and trying them out on my quilting sampler. I love, love the wavy lines and have been seeing them on so many quilts, but I was thinking free-motion and thought, No way I could ever get that to look like anything but tangled threads. Never thought to use a setting on my machine. I have to laugh at how I tend to overthink things. Before I go, I'll just say that I love the Oakshott too. Ugh that it's so expensive, but for a special quilt, how it shimmers and shines! Your husband will just love this.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a gift on so many levels! Oakshott is one of my favorite favorites, both for it's coloration, and weight. It's luscious stuff! You've done it justice here with the pattern to show that off. I was enthralled to see your stitching, and jealous because I don't have the option of doing wavy line stitching on either machine I have. I never considered it would use more thread either. Together, the stitching and fabric are masculine to me, and go together so well. I'm sure there were anxious moments making all your decision, especially when the fabric was so dear.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a beautiful make, and definitely on being a #BraveQuilter at Pink Doxies!
