Blogging tutorial, grab a button

Ok, all you people who know me can stop laughing now, I'm not known for being 'techy'.  This is for a fellow new blogger who uses Blogger and who wants to know how to grab a button and, yes, I know I only learned a couple of days ago but it will also act as a prompt for me if I forget, which is why I made it an idiots guide, my level.  If you know all about buttons then you may want to skip this post, the title says it all.

Most importantly,  I have to say thank you to Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation for giving me permission to use her Needle and Thread button in this tutorial.   I salute Kelly and all the other wonderful quilters who give us all the chance to link up and visit, get to know each other, make new friends, learn, share, and grow.  Kelly's Needle and Thread button is on the right sidebar along with Lorna's Let's Bee Social and Sarah's Can I Get a Whoop Whoop?   More to be added later.  Please check them out if you haven't already done so, and join their linky parties, they are so much fun.

And now without further procrastination...........

First go to the site and find the button you want, underneath it has a box with jumbled writing in, that’s the code, all you do is select it and copy, make sure you highlight ALL of it or it won’t work (yes I messed up first time)

Next open blogger and go into Layout

At the right side you will see add a gadget

Just click the add a gadget box and you get........

Nearly there, click HTML/JavaScript

Click in the box and paste the code you copied from the button and hit save.

You can add text in the Title box but remember in will appear on the blog, I went back and added 'test' so I knew which one it was, and which box I was working with.

This is it at the top.   Just click and drag it to where you want it to go.

Now its at the bottom, the one that says test.  Click Preview to check it's where you want it to be on the blog,  if it's not drag it elsewhere.

Now click on the 'Edit' in the box..........

and delete the world you typed into the title box so it won't show up on the blog then save.  Or leave it if you want it to show.

If you changed your mind about the button click remove.

If you are happy with it click save arrangement at the top right, where the preview button is.

There it is on my blog on my blog.  It will show on every post, including all the old ones.

I hope this all makes sense, I tried to do it logically with lots of pics to make it easy.  Hope you enjoyed this, and if it helps one new blogger then it was worth doing.

Kate

  4. This is great! I will be trying this! I had no idea how the buttons worked, and I'm really glad you explained. Now, are you going to teach us how to do those cool screenshots? (I'm not joking...no idea how to do that, either!)

  5. What a great idea for a tutorial, and so nicely put too! I do admire the love of sharing and helping each other that we have in the quilting community, if only more of the world could be as wonderful and generous!

  6. Thanks Kate, very helpful. I'd done this in the past and then tried again recently and clearly had forgotten how! Now if I could just get all the buttons to look the same size - must do some research into that (unless of course i get distracted sewing!).

  7. Tech problems can take far more time than quilting! Grab My Button Generator has saved me many times, and is also worth adding to your tool box. I have no affiliation with them btw. Tutorials like yours help everyone make their blogs more reader/user friendly. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Barbara is right. I've added buttons fairly recently but I always have to relearn how to do it! So, this will be a great resource.

  12. BIG THANKS for this post. After over a year I finally grabbed a button with your great directions. Amazing I am so far away in Wisconsin and found you, I think via Sandra. I have a good quilt blogger friend in Leeds, Margaret at margiestitcher.blogspot.com. I would appreciate any more tutus like this. I still need to know how to link to another post within my post. Thanks again. I link up with RSC16 at soscrappy and Sew Cute Tuesday at Blossom Heart Quilts and WIPs Be Gone at A Quilting Reader's Garden.

  13. BIG THANKS because after a year of blogging I grabbed my first button myself. Amazing, me in Wisconsin and you in UK. I found you via WIPs Be Gone at A Quilting Reader's Garden, I think. I have a quilt blogger friend in Leeds, Margaret at maggiestitcher.blogspot.com. I look forward to more blogging help so simple to understand.

  14. Help! Your instructions are very clear, but my problem is actually picking up the code to insert into the content box. I've tried and tried, I just can't get anywhere. I wanted to add "The Splendid Sampler" however I am having no success! It must be me, missing out something vital, as others are adding the button I want on their blogs. I'd be really greatfull if you can give me any pointers as to where I am going wrong.

    1. I went on the website, the button in on the FAQ page quite far down. The code is in the grey box and starts <div align= You need to copy all the text in the box, make sure you get the last line which you can hardy see. click at the beginning of the text and keeping your finger on the button go right down to the bottom so all the code changes colour, then press control C, or cmd C if its a Mac and that will copy it. When you want to paste it press control (or cmd) v and that should do it.

Let me know if it works.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave a comment, it helps me grow as a quilter and as a blogger. It also makes me very happy :)
I try to respond to all comments by email, but if I don't reply within a few days it may be because you are a no reply blogger
